Man United close to first summer signing as Mourinho eyes move for 25-year-old: report

Manchester United are seemingly closing in on their first summer signing, with a move for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred in the offing.

That’s what the Manchester Evening News writes in an exclusive, with United expecting to complete a move for the 25-year-old early next month.

The South American is set to travel to Europe next week to take part in Brazil’s pre-World Cup friendly against Croatia, and this seems like the perfect time to conclude the deal.

At this point in time, it’s vital to get the deal wrapped up before Fred jets off to Russia for the World Cup. Not only will that drag the process out, but it’d also allow other teams time to swoop and work on a deal for the Shakhtar midfielder.

Bringing in a world-class box-to-box midfielder simply has to be the priority, and signing Fred would certainly fill a gaping hole within the United squad. Not only are we crying out for that third midfielder to play regularly alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, but we also need replacements for Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini (should he choose to leave).

This would be an excellent start to what is a huge summer for the Red Devils, and it’s great to see Mourinho trying to get his business done early. We know Fred is leaving Ukraine this summer, so let’s hope he’s Manchester United bound.
