Man United have seemingly settled on Thomas Strakosha as their backup goalkeeper.
As we continue to catch up on news over the weekend, the latest story suggests that Manchester United have found their backup goalkeeper for the 2022/23 season.
Dean Henderson will be playing for Nottingham Forest next term, with United needing to bring someone in to sit on the bench and step up in case David de Gea gets injured.
Enter, Thomas Strakosha.
According to TalkSPORT on Saturday, United are ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign the 27-year-old on a free transfer.
The Albanian is available without cost, following the expiry of his contract at Lazio.
Apparently, United spoke to the player’s representatives following the conclusion of Henderson’s loan move, with the likes of Chelsea, Fulham and Leicester all showing an interest in the shot-stopper.
Strakosha had spent seven years with the Serie A side before his deal expired this summer, having a real mixed spell over in Italy.
There were three seasons during which Strakosha was first choice and playing regularly, though during the other four campaigns, he had to settle for bit-part minutes. In the end, he’d play over 200 appearances for Lazio.
Perhaps a move to United was too good too turn down for Strakosha, while the lure of playing in front of 76,000 fans is no doubt a huge one for the player.
I genuinely believe Strakosha will get his fair share of minutes here in Manchester too. With the club playing in the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, the Albanian will absolutely be given plenty of opportunities to impress.
The lack of transfer fee makes this a risk-free deal regardless of what happens.
If Strakosha can go on to be our new Sergio Romero, then I don’t doubt he’ll be a huge hit here in Manchester.
