Man United are edging closer towards their first signing of the summer, in the form of Ajax winger Antony.
It has been a pretty quiet summer for Manchester United Football Club thus far, in terms of incomings at least.
The Old Trafford outfit have confirmed several players will leave upon expiry of their contracts at the end of June, though those players will have to be replaced with genuine quality.
United have been linked with what feels like very name under the sun at this point, with a whole host of Ajax players seemingly high atop Erik Ten Hag’s list of priorities. Obviously, that makes sense given the Dutchman is extremely familiar with what those players can bring to the table.
One of the most heavily linked names is Antony, a Brazilian winger who flourished under Ten Hag in the Eredivisie.
Well, the acquisition of the 22-year-old could be closer than we all thought. The story comes from The Sun, who state that United are ‘closing in’ on their ‘first major signing’ of the summer in the form of Antony.
Apparently, United officials are due in Amsterdam today in an effort to get a £40m deal done.
Brazilian Antony scored twelve and added ten assists for Ajax last season, in just 33 appearances.
Obviously, United have struggled in the wide areas over the last nine months, so it does make sense for the club to bring in at least one attacker to freshen things up.
Obviously, we still don’t know what Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will bring to the table due to their inconsistency, while the only winger I have genuine faith in right now is Jadon Sancho.
Antony will need time to settle into a new league, though the fact that he knows exactly how Ten Hag operates will speed up that process.
A £40m deal feels fair in the current market, so let’s hope this deal is done pretty quickly, allowing United to move onto other targets sooner rather than later.
