Man United could add James Overy to their ranks this summer.

Manchester United completed a deal to bring in young Silva Mexes yesterday, as the club look to bolster the options at youth level.

That spending spree on youngsters is seemingly continuing, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS looking to focus on bringing in younger players and developing their talents. Apparently, that is set to continue with a move to acquire James Overy.

It’s the Manchester Evening News with the story, as they claim that the Reds are ‘close to striking’ an agreement to bring in the talented full-back, aged sixteen.

Overy played for Perth Glory last year, before relocating back to England with his family.

The right-back has been running out for Newton Abbot Spurs since making his move to the UK, though he is attracting interest from Premier League sides. That interest dates back to his Perth Glory days, when, as a 15-year-old, Overy played well in a friendly against West Ham United.

United are said to have offered a scholarship deal to Overy, while they’re ‘hopeful’ that those terms will be accepted by the young man.

These are the sort of moves that United should do more of. They’re risk-free signings with plenty of upside. If Overy does fulfil his talent and potential, he’s the sort of player who could have a path into the Reds first-team in the not too distant future.

Obviously, it may not work out as there’s no guarantee at the highest level, but it’s absolutely worth a throw of the dice from a Reds’ standpoint. For Overy, there’s also no better place in the country to learn your trade than at Manchester United.
