Man United are the club who are believed to be most keen on adding Raphael Varane to their squad this summer.
Harry Maguire’s cruel injury blow at the back end of 2020/21 highlighted Manchester United’s main problem. The lack of leadership, consistency and quality amongst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s other crop of centre-halves is alarming.
A move for Jadon Sancho or Harry Kane would obviously be lovely, though it shouldn’t be Manchester United’s biggest target. The Red Devils simply have to sign a top-level centre-back if they’re serious about challenging for trophies.
Enter, Raphael Varane. The Reds have been heavily linked with the Frenchman this summer already. You’d imagine this one will rumble on for a while.
The latest update comes from Mundo Deportivo (Wednesday print edition), translated via Sport Witness. Apparently, United are the club ‘most interested’ in signing the 28-year-old. That makes sense given the Reds’ current predicament.
It’s stated that United are ready to offer Varane a contract worth over £10m-per-season, while Madrid’s valuation may well have lowered. All previous reports stated the Spanish giants wanted around £51m (€60m) to let Varane leave. MD reckon that figure is closer to £43m (€50m).
I guess it goes without saying that Varane would be a considerable upgrade on what we currently have. While Real are in an uncomfortable situation with Varane’s contract winding down (he has one year left).
The fact that Madrid have signed David Alaba already could hint towards a Varane exit. Old Trafford would be the perfect destination, while United fans will be hoping he’ll have a Virgil van Dijk-like impact if a move does materialise.
