Man United believe their latest offer for Lisandro Martinez will be accepted by Ajax.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United are now in Bangkok as their pre-season tour begins, though the powers that be at the club are still working hard to get signings over the line.
Tyrell Malacia is here, while Christian Eriksen is looking likely to follow. Another position of real need is centre-half, with United identifying Lisandro Martinez as a target.
Yesterday, we covered a story which claimed a new, £42m bid for the Argentine had been made.
Shortly after that, TalkSPORT provided their latest information. They believe United are now ‘confident’ the latest, improved bid for the 24-year-old will be accepted by Ajax. On top of that, the Reds hope they can now tie up the signing ‘quickly’.
Again, it’s reiterated that United are willing to pay £42m (including add-ons) to bring Martinez to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.
The Ajax board met yesterday to discuss the bid, having already lost Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui to Bayern Munich. Understandably, they’re keen to keep ahold of their other key players.
United, on the other hand, hope their good relationship with Ajax will give them an advantage over Arsenal in the race to bring Martinez to Manchester.
TalkSPORT also offer an interesting snippet in regards to Martinez’s position. He’s predominantly a centre-half, though he can also play as a defensive midfielder. Standing at 5ft 8in, perhaps playing him in that midfield role is what Ten Hag has in mind.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you how good Martinez is when the truth is I have rarely seen him play. However, Ten Hag’s plan is clear. He wants to surround himself with familiarity and that absolutely feels like a smart strategy.
