Man United are feeling good about their chances of landing Mauricio Pochettino as manager.
As we all know, Manchester United will be searching far and wide to hire a new manager on a permanent basis come the summer.
Ralf Rangnick’s job was only a six-month one, before the German moves upstairs in a consultancy role after this campaign ends.
Speculation about who United’s new long-term gaffer will be remains rife. Name after name has been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
Perhaps the most common? Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine enjoyed brilliant spells in England with both Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, there’s ‘growing support’ amongst Manchester United players for Pochettino to become the next boss.
What’s also interesting is that United are ‘confident’ of making the 49-year-old their new manager, due to his longstanding interest in becoming Reds gaffer.
It’s also stated that Pochettino was prepared to leave PSG mid-season in order to take over the United hot-seat.
Pochettino is believed to still be in touch with Luke Shaw, whom he managed at Southampton, with the Argentine’s body of work in this country leaving many United players impressed.
United explored the possibility of buying Pochettino out of his PSG contract last year, but it’s understood the French champions decided to play ‘hard ball’.
The feeling appears to be mutual, with both sides wanting this to happen. I don’t want to say it feels like an inevitability, but unless something drastic changes over the next few months, you do get the impression that Pochettino is the strong favourite to be given the United job.
Personally, I think I’d prefer Erik ten Hag at this point – but I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed with a move for Poch.
