Manchester United fans are patiently awaiting their first summer signing, in what could prove to be a pivotal month in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils era.
Although it seems as though a deal for Daniel James is close, another completed transfer could be just on the horizon.
The story comes from A Bola in Portugal, who says that Solskjaer sees Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes as a ‘must sign player’ during this summer transfer window – with the club looking to beat out competition from Manchester City to sign the mega-talented 24-year-old.
Furthermore, A Bola ran the story on their front cover today, in which they claimed that United are confident a deal could be done within the next week.
Fernandes was just exceptional this season. In 53 games, the midfielder scored 32 goals while also tacking on 18 assists for his teammates, with the report claiming that the potential deal would be worth around £71million.
There’s no doubting Fernandes’ talent, but I always have concerns when United are linked with players from Portugal. The jump from the Primeira Liga to the Premier League is a steep one. Some players need a season or two to adapt while others struggle to make the switch at all.
If United do sign Fernandes it would fill a major hole in the squad. It’d also be nice to beat City to his signature, but if we’re being realistic, they’ll have the upper hand due to having Champions League football on offer.
