Man United believe they can secure a deal to sign Jarrad Branthwaite smoothly and speedily, if Everton lower their asking price.
Manchester United have to sign at least one centre-back this summer. With Raphael Varane no longer here, the Red Devils need to sign a quality defender who can fill the hole left by the Frenchman.
The one name most-linked with filling the void left by Rapha is Jarrad Branthwaite. The Everton centre-half is currently away at the European Championships on England duty.
The Mirror have provided the latest update on that front, claiming United are ‘confident’ they can secure the signing of the 21-year-old quickly – though it’s reliant on Everton lowering their asking price.
United have already offered a total package of £43m, but that bid was turned down by the Merseyside club over the weekend. Everton want closer to £70m to part with one of their prized assets.
The Old Trafford club are yet to make an improved bid, while telling Everton they need to be more realistic with their asking price.
Everton could be in a position where they need to sell some players in order to comply with PSR, with United possibly trying to take advantage of that.
With Branthwaite set to be away with England for the foreseeable, I do not believe we’ll see any genuine movement on this front until the defender returns back home. Until that point, the rumours will ramp up and no doubt United will remain in talks with Everton.
This would be an unreal piece of business if United could somehow pull it off, though I suspect Everton will remain firm on their asking price, leaving the Reds hanging and having to move onto other targets.
