Manchester United have confirmed an agreement is in place to sign Lisandro Martinez.
Apparently, Manchester United signings are like buses. You wait ages for one, then the club press on and secure several deals in a week.
First Tyrell Malacia, then Christian Eriksen. Thirdly, Lisandro Martinez.
The club would confirm that an agreement is in place to sign the Argentine this summer, after Ajax and the Red Devils agreed a transfer fee.
United’s acquisition of Martinez is still pending medical, player terms being finalised and international clearance. None of these things should be a serious issue, though it will take a little while to get this signing officially announced.
Obviously, this transfer has been one United have been trying to get over the line for the last few weeks. After drawn-out negotiations and posturing from both clubs, a mutual fee has been reached and United are about to deliver Erik ten Hag his man.
During an extremely impressive Eredivisie campaign, Martinez enjoyed great success under the Dutchman at Ajax, winning their Player of the Year award. That alone should tell you just how talented this young man is – and what sort of player United are getting.
The 24-year-old fits Ten Hag’s style down to a T, mostly due to his excellence with the ball at feet. Couple that with great positional awareness, superb reading of the game and a mature playing style, you’ve got all the makings of a top-quality player.
As has been well-documented, the only concern about Martinez is his height. Standing at 5ft 9in isn’t ideal in the Premier League, though I believe his strengths far outweigh his one possible weakness.
Welcome to United, Lisandro!
