Man United have made their feelings known – they want to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
After sealing a deal for Jadon Sancho, Manchester United aren’t planning on hanging around. Next up? A move for a central defender.
The need to find a partner for Harry Maguire has been there for all to see. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has apparently identified Raphael Varane as the prime target in that area.
Now, we have an update on that brewing saga from none other than Fabrizio Romano. Brace yourself, the Italian journalist goes pretty big…
Apparently, United are ‘now back in direct contact’ with Real Madrid over the Varane signing, after opening talks ‘weeks ago’.
It’s thought that personal terms will be no issue, with United confirming their intention to sign the 28-year-old. An official bid will be placed once United know Madrid’s ‘final position’.
Presumably, United are trying to gauge just how much Real Madrid are going to demand to allow Varane to leave. Obviously, Los Blancos’ hands are tied somewhat due to the fact that the Frenchman’s contract is winding down.
Madrid either have to cash in now or risk losing Varane for nothing next summer. Obviously, that’s not an ideal situation to be in – with United trying to take advantage of that.
I’d expect this saga to drag on for at least a little while yet. However, I have to be honest, I feel really positive about our chances of getting this move done.
It goes without saying, this would be a massive signing if United can pull it off. Dare I say Varane could make an impact similar to that of Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias?
