Man United have signed Jack Butland on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
Manchester United lost Martin Dubravka back to Newcastle United on New Years Day, leaving a gaping hole in the first-team squad.
Erik ten Hag spoke of the troubles when he had three first-team goalkeepers injured during his time at Ajax. A drama he doesn’t want to repeat at Old Trafford…
The rumours picked up speed yesterday, with Jack Butland in talks over a potential loan switch to the Theatre of Dreams.
Now, those rumours have been confirmed to be true by United themselves, who have announced the signing of the 29-year-old on a short-term deal until the end of the campaign.
Butland, once regarded as arguably the best young keeper in English football, still possesses an immense amount of talent and natural ability. You can never take that away from him.
He was a backup at Crystal Palace, though United have likely paid some sort of fee to bring him in for a short amount of time, in order to bolster their goalkeeping department.
The question for Butland was a relatively simple one. Be a backup at Palace, or be a backup at the biggest club in the country? Albeit only for six months.
Butland will get chances with United competing on many fronts. Ten Hag already spoke about the ex-Stoke City man coming in and competing right away with Tom Heaton for those minutes in the cup competitions. Who knows, we could see him involved against Charlton next week.
More than anything, this is a De Gea insurance policy. The only way Butland will play regular minutes is if the Spaniard suffers serious injury.
Welcome, Jack!
