Man United ‘considered’ Douglas Luiz move this summer

Man United weighed up a possible move for Aston Villa midfielder, Douglas Luiz.

It goes without saying, a new midfielder sits atop Manchester United’s current wishlist. Frenkie de Jong has always been the number one target. That deal looks increasingly unlikely to happen, though the Reds are not giving up.

The search has led United far and wide. A deal for Adrien Rabiot looks pretty close, though the Frenchman simply cannot be the only acquisition made in that area of the pitch during this window.

Erik ten Hag is weighing up a variety of options, including Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who state that United ‘considered’ a move to sign the classy 24-year-old Premier League star this summer. Apparently, United looked at possibly making a bid for the Brazilian.

However, Douglas Luiz remains put at Aston Villa, with the midfielder now set to sign a new three-year deal at Villa Park.

Luiz, formerly of Manchester City, has nine Brazil caps to his name. That alone should tell you how talented he is.

I do have concerns about his consistency. Douglas Luiz is a player who can often blow hot and cold from game to game. Perhaps that’s why the Old Trafford club have opted against a move to bring him in.

If you’re directly comparing Douglas Luiz with what United have, his best is lightyears better than Scott McTominay and Fred, though on an average day, I’m not sure there’s an awful lot of difference between them.

Factor in what would be a pretty hefty transfer fee and I can quickly see why United have passed up on this opportunity. That doesn’t make Douglas Luiz a bad player. Just not the sort of upgrade we need right now.

  1. Useful player to stiffen the defence but who is going to be dropped? I have some sympathy with Ten Hag in that he has produced a team that creates goal opportunities. The sad fact is that if your forwards miss open goals, matches will be lost. Blame the forwards, in particular Rashford, for squandering at least two ‘sitters’ per game.
