Man United are considering a fresh bid for Frenkie de Jong.
As anyone who has been following the transfer window will know, Manchester United are consistently being linked with a move to sign Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman’s future at FC Barcelona remains up in the air, with the Catalan club possibly having to part with De Jong in order to ease their financial woes.
At first, it seemed like De Jong wasn’t keen on a move to Old Trafford. However, he seems to be warming to the idea.
Well, we have a fresh update in the situation and it comes from Fabrizio Romano. Apparently, United feel direct talks with the player will be ‘really important’, as the Reds consider a ‘fresh bid’.
On top of that, Barca themselves are also ‘expecting’ United to ‘submit a new proposal’ soon.
As is always the case with these big-money deals, they take time. United will be wanting to get De Jong for as cheaply as possible, while Barca are looking to maximise the transfer fee.
I guess it all comes down to whether United eventually cave and pays Barca what they’re asking. De Jong should come at a premium in most circumstances, though with Barca’s financial difficulties well publicised, it means that United can try to haggle that price down as the Nou Camp club are under serious pressure to sell at least one major asset.
In terms of fit, De Jong would be a stunning signing. The Dutchman would walk into our starting line-up from day one, finally giving us a player who can take the ball confidently on the half-turn and get the whole team moving in the right direction.
I’d like to think that United aren’t wasting their time by chasing De Jong here, because they’ve spent so many hours on trying to get this deal done. I do wonder whether a club with Champions League football on offer will come in at the eleventh hour and try to gazump United’s offer, though.
