Manchester United Football Club are considering plans to up the Old Trafford capacity to 88,000, reports the Daily Mail. Apparently, the club is looking into building a second tier of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, raising the overall capacity by roughly 12,500 seats.
Previously, building over the train line had been a problem for the Red Devils, but advances in technology now mean that this is no longer an issue, and building work could take place.
Of course, the Theatre of Dreams is already by far and away the biggest domestic football stadium in the country, but if these plans go ahead, it’d overtake European stadia’s like the San Siro and the Santiago Bernabeu.
I think that, for what it’s worth, increasing the capacity would be great for the so-called bigger games. Yeah, when Real Madrid & Bayern Munich come to town it’d be wonderful. But, as we saw when Burton Albion visited, I’d hazard a guess at around 50,000 fans being inside the ground which is way below capacity.
The club can certainly afford it, and it’d further showcase the fact that United are by far and away the biggest club in this country. If it’s possible, go for it.
