Man United could make their move to sign Goncalo Ramos in the January transfer window.

Manchester United Football Club return in a little over a week, with a Carabao Cup game against Burnley in the offing. Shortly after that match, the January transfer window opens.

Erik ten Hag is no doubt plotting moves for potential Cristiano Ronaldo replacements, though that’s easier said than done, particularly in the mid-season window.

Several names have been linked. The latest rumour suggests SL Benfica man, Goncalo Ramos, could be on the radar.

It’s The Express with the claim. They suggest that United ‘could turn’ to the 21-year-old in the January transfer window, as they look to replace Ronaldo.

Ramos, who ironically replaced Ronaldo in the Portugal starting line-up, scored an impressive hat-trick in the last sixteen match.

Interestingly, Ten Hag has tracked Ramos for over a year, having seen him up close when he was Ajax manager and they played a European game against Benfica.

United, privately, have stressed they’re prepared to wait until the summer if the January transfer fees prove to be unrealistic. It’s now thought that Ramos is valued in excess of £70m, prior to the World Cup, that figure stood at £25m…

It’s common knowledge that buying in the mid-season window is always tough. It’ll be no different this time around. You also have to factor in United’s funds (or lack of) after spending big in the summer.

That said, Ramos looks like someone who has the potential to lead the line for a top-tier club for the next decade. Perhaps United’s best shot at signing the Portugal international is in the mid-season window – particularly if there’s no Champions League football on the table come May…
