A new striker could be atop Manchester United’s priority list going into this summer, with Tammy Abraham the latest name to be talked up by the media.
Somewhat ironically, Manchester United’s problems have often stemmed from a lack of goals at times this season. That’s despite the vast array of firepower available.
Some legal issues for a certain number eleven didn’t help United’s case, while a loan move away for Anthony Martial definitely left the Red Devils thin on the ground in terms of players available in the final third.
It’s the lads who are here that have left us scratching our heads. Marcus Rashford’s confidence is through the floor. Edinson Cavani doesn’t seem all that interested in playing for his club at this moment in time. As fantastic as Cristiano Ronaldo has been over long stretches, he’s 37 now and the Portugual superstar simply cannot do it all on his own.
Unsurprisingly, then, United are being associated with a vast array of forwards. The latest name to be thrown into the mix is none other than Tammy Abraham.
After a mixed stint at Chelsea, the English striker headed to AS Roma in Italy. By all accounts, he’s loved by their supporters, with the striker doing well.
Now, the Daily Mail have linked United with a move for the 24-year-old striker. However, Abraham would not come cheap, with Roma setting a hefty asking price of £100million. Yes, you did read that correctly…
The article states that Roma face a battle to keep ahold of Abraham, who has scored 23 goals in 37 starts under Jose Mourinho.
That sort of form has sparked interest back in Abraham’s homeland, mainly from Chelsea, who have an option to buy back the striker for about £67million.
The Daily Mail add that United are ‘in the market’ for a centre-forward this summer, with City also keen, though they’re prioritising a move for Erling Haaland. Abraham is also attracting interest from rival European leagues.
Although you can only admire what Abraham has done, I feel like United should be setting their bar a little higher. The Englishman will score goals, but there’s a reason he was deemed not good enough for Chelsea.
When you compare him with Haaland, for instance, it’s a pretty one-sided conversation (and not in Abraham’s favour). United need to be looking for that elite striker who’ll guarantee not only goals on a consistent basis, but a genuine presence up front.
