Man United will have to continue their search for a centre-back signing this summer, as Antonio Rudiger has already agreed to a move elsewhere…
This squad is filled with holes. I’m not sure how, given huge money has been spent to strengthen this playing squad in each and every single summer transfer window over the last few years.
Yet, we find ourselves at a crossroads again. A new manager is in place. Erik ten Hag will bring his own ideas, tactics and style. New signings are needed to fit that style.
One man who has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils is Antonio Rudiger. The German is out of contract at Chelsea this summer, with Old Trafford making a play to acquire the centre-half.
Well, United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the 29-year-old, who has reached a transfer agreement with Real Madrid. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist claims this will be a long term deal for Rudiger, who has greatly impressed for Chelsea, particularly over the last couple of years under Thomas Tuchel. Sadly, United’s chase of the German is now over.
Check out Fabrizio Romano’s tweet on the situation here:
There’s no doubt that Rudiger would have been a huge upgrade on our current crop of centre-halves. While he would’ve brought some much-needed personality and desire to win in a dressing room that seriously needs it.
On the flip side of that, United must not push too hard for players who don’t want to wear that Red shirt with pride. Rudiger seemingly wasn’t interested in United, so it’s probably wise that he didn’t end up coming here purely for the money.
There are also positives to be taken in the fact that Rudiger has made his choice early. It means United won’t spend the summer chasing a man who always had his heart set on moving elsewhere. Now, the club have time to identify and pursue alternate options.
