Man United’s pursuit of Raphael Varane has been dealt a blow.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interest in Raphael Varane has been well documented here at Old Trafford Faithful.
Now, there’s another update in the saga and it comes from Spanish media outlet, El Confidencial, translated by Caught Offside. They say that the Reds target is set to leave his current club, Real Madrid, this summer. Varane is refusing to sign a new contract, forcing the Spanish giants to sell him this summer – or risk losing him for free in twelve months time.
However, that’s sadly where the good news stops for United. Apparently, Varane wants a return to his homeland of France, with Paris Saint-Germain the club the 28-year-old wants to join.
As of right now, Varane is expected to cost around £52m, which is easily affordable for both PSG and United. It’s claimed that United are still interested so the chase is not completely over, though Solskjaer’s side would have to do something pretty special to convince Varane to make the move to Manchester.
If Varane doesn’t want to be here, that’s absolutely his prerogative and I wish him well. At least we know this early on in the window, rather than waiting until the last second leaving very little time to look at alternatives.
The last thing United need to do is waste time chasing an unobtainable target. We’ve been there before and it never ends well, so the sooner Solskjaer starts looking at other options, the better.
You could do worse than Joules Kounde, Pau Torres or even someone like Ben White. Honestly, at this point, I’d take a gamble on anyone…
