Man United dealt blow in pursuit of Tosin Adarabioyo

Man United will seemingly not be winning the race to sign Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer.

Manchester United simply have to sign a new defender this summer. Possibly even a couple. Erik ten Hag may or may not be in charge for the 2024/25 campaign, though that area of the field absolutely needs work.

Several names have been linked with filling the void. Perhaps none more than Tosin Adarabioyo. The Fulham man had been heavily touted as someone who could come in, on the cheap, and add some extra quality to the centre-back position.

However, that looks like it will no longer be happening. Journalist Craig Hope, who writes for the Daily Mail, has provided an update on that front.

Sadly, it is not good news. United have been dealt a blow in pursuit of the 26-year-old defender, as Newcastle United ‘close in’ on the signing of Adarabioyo.

According to Hope, a framework of a contract is now in place, while the finer details will be sorted over the coming weeks. Adarabioyo will be a free agent signing as his Fulham contract winds down this summer.

In terms of free agent signings, there wouldn’t have been many better available than Adarabioyo. He has Premier League experience, while he has consistently improved over the course of the season.

I am pretty gutted that Newcastle United have won the race, as it further bolsters their already solid defence.

With money tight, this would have been an astute first piece of business by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

Now, this means that one or two things have happened. Either United’s interest didn’t lead to an official bid. Or, Newcastle United simply were a more attractive prospect for the player. Given they finished higher in the table and have European football on offer, this is the one I feel is far more likely.

It’s just another brutal indictment on where the Red Devils are at the moment…
