Man United defender Victor Lindelof named Sweden captain

Man United centre-half Victor Lindelof has been named Sweden captain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now gearing up for his third full season in charge of Manchester United. Credit where it’s due, nobody expected this sort of upwards form from the Red Devils under his guidance.

Slowly but surely, the Baby Faced Assassin is turning this side into one that is capable of winning titles. There are several big personalities and top-class players in that dressing room, all are title-hungry. Amongst them? Victor Lindelof.

The Ice Man’s place in the starting line-up is no longer a guarantee following the arrival of Raphael Varane. However, he’s a great player on his day.

So-much-so, that the United star has today been named the captain of his native Sweden. While being bestowed with the armband, Lindelof has spoken of his pride and how much of a ‘very great honour’ it is to lead his nation out.

“It is a very great honour but also a great responsibility. When I was growing up, I dreamed, just like all other young football players, of playing for Sweden.” Lindelof told Sweden Football.

“Every time I put on the blue and yellow shirt, I feel enormous pride. To now be able to represent the country with the bandage around my arm will be very big for me.”

The 27-year-old is now approaching his peak years as a defender and he will likely start the season as first-choice alongside Harry Maguire. If he plays well, there’s every chance Solskajer keeps the faith in the Swede.

After an excellent EURO 2020 with his country, Lindelof enters this season in an excellent frame of mind for multiple reasons. His confidence will be through the roof after being given the armband and I don’t doubt he’ll hit the ground running this weekend.

Now, the hard work starts. Leeds United is no easy opening day fixture. Lindelof has to put in a strong display to send out a message to the doubters.

Congratulations, Victor!
