Man United desperate to sign Alderweireld, £25m release clause: report

Manchester United’s inability to prevent the opponent from scoring goals has been a major factor in their rapid downfall over the last twelve months.

The defensive-minded Jose Mourinho tried and failed. If he can’t stop his team conceding, then who can?

Basically, this team needs money pumping into it and I’ve always been a firm believer in building from the back. That’s a strategy that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer probably should adopt this summer, with a shiny new centre-back hopefully sitting atop his wishlist.

According to a report from The Telegraph, United are ‘desperate’ to land the signature of Toby Alderweireld this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur recently trigged a one-year extension within the 30-year-old’s contract, although in doing so, they activated a £25million release clause.

In this day and age, £25m for a player of Alderweireld’s calibre is an absolute steal. He’d be the perfect player for United to build their defence around – largely due to his leadership qualities.

Having that experience in amongst a relatively young defence could prove vital towards making this defence a watertight one, although at this juncture I’m not convinced as to whether Alderweireld would want to come…

We have to be realistic about our prospects at signing the Belgium defender. Let’s be honest, he’s gearing up for a Champions League final while United are preparing to spend the next twelve months in the Europa League. That could prove to be a slight issue…
