Man United discussing move for Villareal’s Pau Torres

Man United could make a move for Villareal centre-half, Pau Torres, this summer.

Manchester United have conceded the fifteenth-most goals in the Premier League this season. Despite having one of the best expensive back lines in world football…

Yet again, we’re sat here discussing the need to move for another new central defender. Harry Maguire has struggled this term, Victor Lindelof remains inconsistent, Raphael Varane has struggled with injuries while neither Phil Jones nor Eric Bailly can be trusted.

You’re not winning trophies without at least a semi-reliable back line. In those tight-knit games, you need your central defenders to stand up and be counted, not hide away.

A player linked with a potential United move this summer is Pau Torres. The Villareal centre-back has been in fine form again this term, so a move would undoubtedly make sense on our part.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided us with an update on that brewing saga. He claims United are ‘discussing’ a move for the 25-year-old centre-back. He’s one of a few options the Old Trafford club have going into this all-important window.

No proposal has been made to the player as of yet, with the transfer depending on Erik ten Hag and whether he wants to work with Torres. Chelsea are also keen on the Spaniard, who has a release clause of around £50million in his current contract.

If Chelsea back up their interest with an official bid, it may be hard to persuade Torres to make the move to Manchester instead. After all, they have Champions League football on the table. We do not.

With that said, if Torres wants to play regularly, Old Trafford may well be the place for him. United just want someone who can stay fit, defend reliably and put a shift in. That’s how low the bar has dropped over the last few years.

There’s no doubt Torres would walk straight into our side from day one, while offering us a massive upgrade on what we have already. I’d love to see this move go through, though I am getting sick of us constantly failing when it comes to signing centre-halves.
