Erik ten Hag has confirmed that two Man United first-teamers are doubtful for the game against Newport County this weekend with illness.
Manchester United take on Newport County on Sunday afternoon, with a place in the FA Cup fifth round at stake.
Erik ten Hag’s team haven’t played for a fortnight, so I was fully expecting the gaffer to name as strong-a-side as possible here. Particularly as the FA Cup represents our only chance at winning a major trophy this season.
Ahead of the game, Ten Hag delivered the all-important team news, confirming that a duo are doubtful for the Newport County game due to illness.
Both Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford reported to training on Friday with some sort of sickness bug, meaning their availability is up in the air for this massive away game.
Rashford could have done with the minutes in order to continue to work his way into form, though in terms of the result, his absence should not change a thing. Whatever side United put out should be strong enough.
As for Evans, I’m not sure he would have started this game anyway. The Northern Irishman would have likely dropped to the bench anyway, with Lisandro Martinez another player who is looking to build up the match fitness after his lengthy injury issue.
It’s never ideal when players are missing, but at least it’s just illness rather than a muscle injury or serious problem. In all likelihood, this will be a problem for a few days and then these guys will be back at 100% before we even know it.
Get well soon, lads.
