Man United have cut short their pursuit of Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.
Not too long ago, we covered reported Manchester United interest in Watford goalkeeper, Daniel Bachmann.
Those stories went as far as suggesting that United had opened talks to sign the Austrian, giving us all the impression that a deal was somewhat close.
Well, it looks as though that deal has now taken a turn. Suddenly, it looks dead in the water.
It’s the Daily Mail with the scoop, who claim that United are ‘unwilling to pay’ Watford’s demands to bring Bachmann in. Effectively, United have ended their pursuit of the 27-year-old.
Honestly, it felt like Bachmann would have been a good fit. He’s a cracking goalkeeper within his own right, while a move to the Theatre of Dreams probably would have been too good too turn down for the player.
Although no fee is mentioned by the Mail, the aforementioned link we shared from The Athletic claims that around £4-5m would get the deal done. In relative terms, that a generally-small figure.
It just goes back to United’s unwillingness to overspend for any player anymore – which is obviously a good strategy.
That said, the need for United to sign a goalkeeper remains. Dean Henderson looks all set to join Nottingham Forest on a loan deal for this season, so the Old Trafford club need a number two (or three) they can 100% trust to come in and do a job when David de Gea isn’t available.
Who that next target will be is anyone’s guess, though as the summer wears on, I assume we’ll start being linked with some top-class back-up keepers.
What’s Sergio Romero up to these days…?
