Man United have apparently added youngster Ryan Gravenberch to their list of transfer targets.
The story comes from the Daily Mirror, who, on Wednesday evening, claimed that United have ‘entered the race’ to sign emerging 18-year-old Gravenberch.
According to their story, the Reds are ‘keeping tabs’ on Gravenberch, as are Liverpool. The two English clubs have joined both FC Barcelona and Juventus in pursuit of the Ajax youngster, who is turning heads all across Europe.
In terms of style, Gravenberch has been compared to current United midfielder Paul Pogba. Strong, physical, an excellent passer and super-direct.
With that in mind, the rumour does make sense with Pogba’s long-term future at United far from secure. Gravenberch would come in with far less pressure on his shoulders, though he’d certainly have large shoes to fill…
The level of clubs interested in Gravenberch should alone tell you about his talent. Players from the famous Ajax academy have always gone on to enjoy success, with the midfielder already racking up eighteen first-team appearances for the Dutch outfit.
What would Gravenberch offer United?
For United, it’s a move that fits in with their style. The Red Devils have a stunning record when it comes to signing youngsters and developing their talents. It certainly feels as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing his utmost to continue that mantra.
Rumour has it that Ajax are struggling financially due to COVID-19, so they may well be forced into parting with their prized assets for cheaper than they’d usually like.
What’d make this move different to the Donny van de Beek deal is that Gravenberch would be long-term thinking, while Van de Beek is ready to play in the here and now.
If the deal were to happen, I wouldn’t imagine we’d see movement until next summer at the earliest. Plus, United would be facing an uphill battle to persuade him to make the move to Old Trafford.
For now, take this one with a pinch of salt. I don’t doubt United’s interest is genuine, just as every club in the world would like Gravenberch as a player. I just don’t see any real movement on this transfer happening anytime soon…
