Man United are apparently interested in a surprise move to sign Chelsea defender, Antonio Rudiger.
Ralf Rangnick’s side will take time to take shape. Manchester United Football Club will head in a different direction under the German (and whoever his permanent successor may be).
With that comes new signings that fit the system. Money (and perhaps a lot of it) will need to be spent. Well over the last 24 hours, the Old Trafford club have been linked with a new name; Antonio Rudiger.
The story comes from Sky Sports Germany, who state that United have entered the race to sign the 28-year-old defensive star. Rudiger has six months left on his contract, meaning he’d be available for free next summer.
Amongst the other sides interested in Rudiger is Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, which tells you everything you need to know about what Rudiger can offer any top side. Sky Sports Germany describe the brewing saga as ‘transfer poker’ as these clubs look to sign a top-class player in a deal without a transfer fee.
Obviously, defensively, we’ve been pretty awful of late. Aside from Raphael Varane, our current crop of centre-backs have been nothing but inconsistent. You can’t win titles with that.
The problem for me is that Rudiger also fits into that inconsistent category. He’s a red card waiting to happen at times, while also being an epic wind-up merchant.
One thing I will say is that Rudiger puts his body on the line for the cause. He’s someone who can fire up his teammates when the going gets tough. It’s a gamble bringing him in but it’s a deal that’s worth exploring at the very least given the fact that there would be no transfer cost for the Old Trafford club.
