Man United expect Barcelona to sign De Ligt this summer: report

Manchester United links with Matthijs de Ligt just won’t let up. I guess the fact that the Red Devils are even mentioned in the same breath as the Dutchman just goes to show how giant this club is.

Deep down, we all probably figured it’d be highly unlikely that the Red Devils would secure the signature of the top-class 19-year-old – mostly due to a lack of Champions League football on offer.

Today, the Manchester Evening News have run a story that backs that up. Their sources are telling them that United ‘still expect’ De Ligt to head to Barcelona during this summer transfer window.

Apparently, the suspicion amongst the United chiefs is that the story is being framed so Barcelona can claim that they beat United to De Ligt’s signature.

First of all, I’d hope that is the case because Barca can offer Champions League football, plus they’re perennial winners. I’d be pretty disappointing if I were a Catalonian and they didn’t think that Barca would win this race – they should do, and easily!

It just further highlights how far we’ve fallen in recent years. United are no longer the big draw that they once were, and although I’m sure the club were interested in signing De Ligt, they were never really in the race from the get-go…
