Man United may well be in the market for a long-term Nemanja Matic replacement, with the Reds now credited with an interest in Declan Rice.
Manchester United Football Club have offered up a real mixed bag of performances and results this season. Credit where it’s due, though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are improving.
The Red Devils are still a few pieces away from competing at the business end of the table season-in-season-out, with the Baby Faced Assassin slowly working towards that end goal.
Now, Declan Rice’s name has been thrown into the mix as a potential signing. The story comes from the usually excellent Ian McGarry, who is an absolute wizard where transfer rumours are concerned.
Apparently, the classy 22-year-old midfielder has ‘roused’ United’s transfer interest. With Liverpool also keen. United have asked to be kept informed in regards to any offers made for the England international – which leads us to believe United’s interest in Rice is pretty serious.
Check out what McGarry had to say here:
“He is no longer on the transfer list of recruitment possibilities for the Stamford Bridge club, but he has certainly roused the interest of Liverpool and Manchester United.” McGarry said on the Transfer Window Podcast.
“Both of whom have expressed interest to Rice’s agent as we understand and they have asked to be kept informed of any offers made for the England international.”
There is absolutely no doubt that Rice is enjoying his best season this term. David Moyes has him playing some brilliant stuff at the base of that midfield.
However, here’s where I have a problem. What about Scott McTominay? Our box-to-box man does a pretty similar job to Rice. The Scotland international has also come on leaps and bounds this season and I’m not sure the pair can play together in the same XI.
Would United really be best-served by splashing that much cash on someone like Rice? He certainly wouldn’t be cheap, particularly as he’s coming from a fellow Premier League club.
Personally, I’d give Matic another year to sit in behind McTominay and address more pressing matters like right-wing and centre-half this summer.
