Man United express interest in Leon Bailey in cut-price deal

Well, it seems as though the Leon Bailey to Man United rumours are starting to pick up pace.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we covered a story from the Daily Mail in which it was claimed that Manchester United were giving ‘serious consideration’ to a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen’s star winger.

This morning, those claims have been backed up by the usually-reliable David Ornstein in The Athletic. Apparently, United have expressed an interest in the versatile 22-year-old – though they aren’t the only interested party, with Manchester City also keen.

It is stressed, though, that Bailey wouldn’t be a first-choice target to either Manchester club. However, the Jamaican actually favours a move to England this summer…

What makes this story interesting is that Bailey, who Bayer Leverkusen were originally looking for around £45million in terms of a transfer fee for Bailey, may now have to settle for £18m-£27m (€20-30m) due to the COVID-19 pandemic which is wreaking havoc across the footballing world.

With that in mind, Bailey surely becomes a viable option for the Old Trafford club? Sure, Jadon Sancho remains the absolute dream, though Bailey is just as versatile as his English counterpart as both can play all across the front line just in behind the striker. Plus, Bailey could be roughly 66% cheaper than Sancho

I’d imagine there are several clubs interested in Bailey, but if it’s a straight race between United and City, I’d definitely give us the upper-hand. Out wide is an area where Pep Guardiola’s men are remarkably-stacked. Unless they’re planning on losing a player or two, Bailey would have a far better chance at playing regularly if he chose red over blue…

For what it’s worth, United could definitely do worse. Bailey is a supremely talented young man who’d improve pretty much any squad in world football. In my opinion, this feels like a risk that’s worth taking.
