Manchester United attention is now firmly on Dayot Upamecano, after sealing a deal for Donny van de Beek.
Although a move for the Dutchman is not yet official, United are seemingly confident the deal is all-but agreed. Now, the Red Devils are switching their focus elsewhere.
Apparently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now wants to prioritise finding a long-term partner for Harry Maguire, with Upamecano being the top target.
Aged 21, Upamecano is only going to improve as a footballer. Following an excellent campaign in both the Bundesliga and Champions League, interest in the Frenchman has only grown.
RB Leipzig did actually manage to tie Upamecano down to a new contract, though apparently, that deal includes a £37m (€42m) release clause – which can be activated at the end of the 2020/21 term.
Where would Dayot Upamecano fit in at United?
Well, you’d like to think the centre-half would slot right into the first-team. After all, his competition, Maguire aside, is rather unreliable.
Victor Lindelof has been hit and miss while doubts about Eric Bailly’s fitness remain. Phil Jones, well, he’s Phil Jones, while who knows what’s happening with Chris Smalling? Sure, the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi are coming through. However, Upamecano has way more experience than them both.
He’s quick, strong, great in the air and a reliable player. Upamecano, on paper, feels the perfect partner for Maguire. In terms of United interest, we covered a story back in April which claimed the Reds were keen – so this doesn’t have the feel of a panic signing. Rather, Solskjaer and Ed Woodward have certainly done their homework.
At a great price for a young player, a Red Devils move for Upamecano makes perfect sense. Hopefully, we can get a deal done.
