Man United have their sights set on Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves, should a deal for Frenkie de Jong fall through.
We’ve said it for a few weeks now. If Manchester United fail in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, it can only be described as a disaster.
The Old Trafford club have been chasing the Dutchman all summer, with the pendulum swinging back and forth in United’s pursuit of De Jong. One week he looked like a sure-fire addition, the next the Reds look hopeless in their chase of the Dutchman.
As time drags on, you fear that De Jong will eventually end up staying at Barca or moving elsewhere. The good thing for United is they have a back-up plan in place…
According to TalkSPORT, they have eyes on a Premier League duo if the De Jong deal does fall through; Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves.
“I know Manchester United have a back-up list. Youri Tielemans is on that list, as I understand it, as is Ruben Neves from Wolves.” Crook told TalkSPORT.
“I would call Barcelona’s bluff now and say ‘either you sell him to us, or we will pay the same money and sign Ruben Neves’. He’s a player who is proven in the Premier League.”
Either feels like an excellent option, though De Jong obviously should remain the number one target due to his superior ability and experience at a higher level.
That said, both Tielemans and Neves come with their own positives.
Tielmans’ time at Leicester has been largely positive. The Belgium international scored the winning goal in an FA Cup final, while proving himself as one of the best midfielders in the league.
According to TalkSPORT, he’d cost around £30-£35million. That’s due to a winding down contract, though no doubt they’ll be other interested parties at that excellent price.
Then you have Neves. He’s more of a deeper-lying midfielder but that could be exactly what United need given the losses of both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. The Portugal international has shone for Wolves, from their time in the Championship to pushing up the Premier League table year on year.
In terms of fee, Neves would cost slightly more at £50million, but again, it’d be a solid piece of business if this is the route United wanted to take.
If I had to set an order, it’d be De Jong first and foremost, then Neves, then Tielemans. I’d genuinely be happy if we signed any of these guys though, as all would improve our starting line-up pretty significantly.
