Manchester United’s summer transfer window was one to forget; namely in Jose Mourinho’s search to sign a central defender.
Not one was signed, despite moves for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and others. Now, attentions have turned across Europe, with Mourinho looking at moving for Germany U21 international defender, Arne Maier.
That’s according to Sport1, per the Daily Star. Although the Red Devils won’t be alone in pursuit of the 19-year-old, with Arsenal and FC Barcelona both seemingly keen.
I think the start to the season has only backed up the belief that United needed to sign a new centre-half. Eric Bailly has looked like he has regressed, while Phil Jones well, he’s been Phil Jones.
With that said, I think we need to be looking at players with experience and proven ability rather than going for another youngster. We’ve seen that they need time in the past. Right now, United need someone with that ready-made ability. Someone who can come straight into the team and prove his worth from the get-go.
For now, though, it’s down to the current crop to keep working hard and fight for their places. January is a notoriously tough time to buy players, so I wouldn’t expect to see any business undertook until next summer. An awful lot can change in twelve months…
