I think it’s common knowledge that Manchester United are in the market for a new central defender this summer, now two more names have been thrown into the ring.
The news comes from Italy, namely Calciomercato. The report has been translated by the Manchester Evening News, and it suggests that the Red Devils are interested in signing AC Milan centre-halves, Leonardo Bonucci and Alessio Romagnoli.
There is an issue, however, with Paris Saint-Germain also keen on the defensive pair, who could well leave the San Siro this summer. Milan are cash-strapped, while also in danger of risking FFP sanctions. They could be forced into selling some key stars; although Bonucci only arrived just last summer.
If I had to choose one, it’d be Bonucci. He’s experienced, proven and a natural winner. United need that veteran leadership. The Italian would bring that in abundance.
Stick him alongside an Eric Bailly, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young either side, our back four is already looking much better. Now, it’s down to Edward Woodward to crack on with the Serie A side and try to push this deal over the line as soon as possible. Hopefully before more teams show an interest…
