Man United fans were thrilled with what they saw from Hannibal Mejbri in the UEFA Youth League vs Borussia Dortmund last night.
Although Manchester United were dumped out of the UEFA Youth League on penalties last night, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
The academy setup at Manchester United has looked back to its best over the last few years. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves serious credit for hoovering up some of the best talent out there.
During the game against Borussia Dortmund last night, which ended 2-2 before our spot-kick exit, Hannibal Mejbri was undoubtedly the standout.
The Frenchman has often looked a cut above this level and the game yesterday was more of the same. The young United midfielder was bossing proceedings throughout, particularly enjoying himself in the second 45 minutes.
It’s the calmness in which he plays with, while having the skill to execute both the simple and more difficult passes. He plays with a directness, a sharpness, a genuine class. This young man is undoubtedly a star in the making.
He’s not the only one, I’ll add. Several of this United youth side have genuine chances at going right the way to the top. But as things stand, Hannibal feels like the youngster most ready for a first-team opportunity.
For Ralf Rangnick (or the next permanent manager), it’s about getting the timing right when it comes to taking that next step. Throw him in too early and it could dent his confidence. Leave it too late and it’s time wasted. It’s a fine balance.
As you’d imagine, United fans would take to Twitter by the masses, absolutely buzzing with what they saw from the 19-year-old during a top display.
