Manchester United had a simply stunning pre-season. The reasoning behind that was an injection of youthful exuberance. Sometimes there’s nothing better than fresh ideas being brought to the table.
Although Mason Greenwood scooped all the headlines, my standout performer from pre-season tour was Angel Gomes. The attacking midfielder led by example. He was by far and away the best presser of the football, while his offensive abilities speak for themselves.
It’s a shame that since the season has started he’s yet to make the bench. There is good news in the fact that Gomes hasn’t played for the U23s either, but right now he seems to be stuck in the middle of both teams.
With a year left on his contract it’s make or break for United. They either play Gomes or lose him for nothing – and it’s clear the fans want to see the former happen.
Several have taken to Twitter to call for the 18-year-old to get his first-team chance. This weekend’s game against Crystal Palace feels like the perfect opportunity to do exactly that, though whether it’ll happen is another question…
For me, Gomes warrants an opportunity. I can see why Solskjaer wants to wait and use him in the Europa League and Carabao Cup tournaments which start next month, but I’d much prefer to see him get a chance right now, particularly while Jesse Lingard is struggling…
