Yesterday, Manchester United Football Club confirmed that Juan Mata had signed a two-year contract extension, with the option for a further year if the Red Devils see fit.
After both Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia chose to leave over the summer, many thought Mata, aged 31, was to go the same way. However, the superstar Spaniard has committed his future to the Old Trafford club for what’s probably the beginning of the end of his career.
The attacking midfielder has always been amongst the most likeable guys on and off the football field – and it’s great to have a personality like him in and around the dressing room. It also means at least one of David de Gea’s buddies is sticking around – so hopefully, the goalkeeper decides to stay put too…
Somewhat surprisingly, United Twitter was split right down the middle in regards to Mata putting pen to paper. Some were unhappy with the length of the deal, while it seems as though others just wanted ‘the blogger’ gone.
For me, it was good the club have agreed a deal with him but I have to admit that handing him a potential three-year terms does seem somewhat excessive. Anyway, we’ve compiled some of the best (and worst) Twitter responses to the new contract below:
And now for the not-so-positive…:
