Axel Tuanzebe was given the rare opportunity to start a game vs Granada last night. He’d take his chance, leaving the fans impressed with a very good performance.
Manchester United have made it to yet another semi-final. Let’s hope it’s fifth-time lucky for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In truth, Granada didn’t really test the Red Devils whatsoever, though AS Roma certainly will over the course of 180 minutes. We’ll need to be at our absolute best for that one.
Yesterday’s game was always one for rotation. However, Axel Tuanzebe’s inclusion in the side was an enforced one due to Harry Maguire’s suspension. It’s fair to say the young defender grabbed his opportunity with both hands.
Tuanzebe hadn’t played any minutes since a half at defensive-midfield against Real Sociedad back in February. To complete a full 90 minutes, without much match sharpness under your belt, deserves credit.
Not only that, it was a performance of real maturity. Going against a wily old pro like Roberto Soldado is never easy, though Tuanzebe rose to the challenge and didn’t give the veteran a sniff of an opportunity.
He was great with the ball at his feet, won his individual duels, made some key interceptions and wasn’t afraid to clear the ball when needed. Although it was an enforced change, Solskjaer would no doubt have been pleased with what he saw from Tuanzebe.
Now, it’s about keeping that confidence flowing. It’s easy to forget how talented this young man is. I’m hoping he’s given some more minutes from now until the season’s end, if only to see if he has what it takes to make it at United as a regular starter.
For someone who hasn’t played since February 25th, Tuanzebe was impressive. As you’d imagine, the United fans would heap the praise on the young defender all over Twitter.
