Harry Maguire was an absolute colossus vs West Ham last night, with Man United fans reacting by the masses on social media.
Manchester United moved three points closer to securing their position as the best of the rest, with an unconvincing-yet-important win over West Ham United.
With injuries decimating the squad, all that matters was the victory. In the end, we managed that – most notably due to the back four and goalkeeper, who didn’t give West Ham a sniff of an opportunity all night.
Look, we’ve been the first to bash our backline for their many awful displays this season. But we’re fair and we’ve praised them in equal measure when they play well. I’m pleased to report, last night was the latter.
Luke Shaw was named Man of the Match while Victor Lindelof didn’t put a foot wrong. For us, though, it was the captain’s performance from Harry Maguire that was the most pleasing.
Honestly, we’re sick of discussing his hefty price-tag. Sadly, that’s not going away. Maguire can’t do anything about that. All the Englishman can do is play his best football.
Against West Ham, he won absolutely every single defensive header, was first to loose balls and made several key interceptions and blocks. The Irons didn’t threaten our goal with any purpose all game.
What I like about these games without fans is that you can hear absolutely everything being said by the players. Maguire was supremely vocal on more than one occasion, barking orders at his players when they needed it – and this is exactly what you expect from your captain.
Whether he has the right partner next to him remains to be seen. Constant links to centre-halves would give you a glimpse into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s thoughts on the situation, but for now, I’m seriously enjoying watching Maguire flourish.
As you’d expect, United fans would react in their droves to the performance from the star who often splits opinion. Last night he truly was outstanding.
