First of all, I’d like to apologise. I’ve been the first to state that the starting left-back job at Manchester United’s was now Brandon Williams’ to lose. Honestly, I thought Luke Shaw was done at Old Trafford. Oh, how wrong I was…
It seems as though the ex-Southampton man has used stiff competition from his pal Williams as motivation, and it’s superb to see Shaw playing arguably the best football of his (still young) career.
Against Derby County in the FA Cup last night, it was more of the same. Shaw buccaneered up and down that left-hand side throughout, opening the scoring with a smart strike in which he struck the ball into the ground to loop it over a hapless keeper.
He wasn’t done there, though. Shaw kept getting shots off at goal, continued to make penetrating runs and defended with real diligence. It’s great to see the young man starting to resemble that great talent we had on our hands before picking up serious injury.
As you’d imagine, United fans were full of praise for the 24-year-old following the win. Rightly so, too, it was an exceptional display and long may it continue!
