Donny van de Beek must be feeling so, so good this morning, after scoring for Holland during their 7-0 win over Gibraltar.
Manchester United Football Club thought they were getting a fully-ready player in Donny van de Beek when they signed him from Ajax. The early signs were certainly good, as he’d score on debut against Crystal Palace.
Since then, though, it’s rapidly gone downhill. The midfielder has barely been given a real run of games to prove his worth, and when called upon, Van de Beek has seriously struggled.
At this point, I’m not quite sure where he fits into this Manchester United setup. He’s hardly going to replace Bruno Fernandes in that side, is he?
I still hold out hope that in the long-term, Van de Beek can play alongside Fernandes though right now, that doesn’t seem like an option that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in.
Injuries haven’t helped Van de Beek either, though he would return to fitness in time to head off for international duty with his beloved Netherlands. What a welcome break it would have been for the 23-year-old.
Last night, things would get even better for Van de Beek as he’d score with his first shot, in the 7-0 rout against Gibraltar. Van de Beek would only play thirteen minutes – but he looked pretty sharp.
He looks far more at home in that Netherlands midfield than he does in that United one, however, it’s always tough moving into a new environment. Perhaps we’ll see a better player next term.
As you’d imagine, Manchester United fans would heap the praise on the Reds star after his goal. Hopefully, this is the start of something good for the Dutchman.
