Donny van de Beek scores for Holland last night, as pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start him regularly continues to grow.
Signed from Ajax over the summer, the glimpses we’ve seen of Donny van de Beek have all been hugely positive. Intelligent, an excellent passer, positionally aware and a hard-worker. The boy has it all.
It’s somewhat strange, then, that Van de Beek has been used sparingly. Aside from one start in Europe and a couple of starts in the cups, Van de Beek has often been rooted to the bench and we’re all not sure why.
Sure, I get it, the trio of Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes looks pretty solid, but surely Van de Beek is a direct upgrade on what Fred brings? Don’t get me wrong, I like the Brazilian, but Donny and Bruno in the same team just feels pretty special.
Anyway, calls for Van de Beek to start games has only grown overnight. The midfielder would put in another classy performance, during which he scored, against Spain last night. He’s literally proving his worth against arguably the best national side in the world.
With United’s fixtures easing up after the international break, I’d like to think we’ll see more of Van de Beek. He definitely deserves a real run in the side to show us all what he can do. Hopefully, that’ll happen sooner rather than later. For now, he’ll just have to remain patient, but he must be chomping at the bit to get involved and start powering United up the league table.
As you’d imagine, the United fans took to Twitter to react in their droves and their message was clear. They were calling for the 23-year-old to start more games on the back of his goal.
