Manchester United fans were rather pleased when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the decision to cull the squad and get rid of the dead-wood.
Well, it turns out these Red Devils who have left are all pretty decent. Romelu Lukaku has started life in Italy like a house on fire, while Alexis Sanchez scored twice on his first Inter start over the weekend. Next in line is Chris Smalling.
Many deemed it a masterstroke that Solskjaer managed to ship Smalling away from Old Trafford on loan, particularly with Harry Maguire’s arrival.
Well, against Lecce in the Serie A last night, the 29-year-old United loanee put in a Man of the Match performance to be proud of. Perhaps now, it feels like some fans are starting to realise that the problem lies closer to home.
It can’t be just a coincidence that everyone who leaves seemingly plays better away from the Theatre of Dreams. Though as one fan correctly states, I guess it helps when the fans aren’t constantly on your back and Phil Jones isn’t your central-defensive partner…
For what it’s worth, I’m delighted for Smalling. I’ve always felt like over the last few years he’s actually been our best defender. Sure, he may not be of the required level but for the most part the Englishman has been solid.
