Raphael Varane put in a top performance on his Old Trafford debut yesterday, with the fans loving every second of the Frenchman vs Newcastle.
Manchester United moved to the top of the table thanks to a clinical performance against Newcastle United yesterday.
As you’d imagine, a certain Cristiano Ronaldo would steal the show, scoring two goals on debut and sending the Old Trafford crowd into raptures.
However, it was his former Real Madrid teammate who impressed me the most; Raphael Varane.
The Frenchman partnered Harry Maguire at the heart of our defence and just went about his business in a typical manner. He’d bring a calmness, a presence, a defensive astuteness to the back line – and it was brilliant to watch him in action.
Varane just casually coasts through games, putting in a Rolls Royce-type performance, marshalling things wonderfully well. It was a display of a Champion. We’re seriously lucky to have him.
No doubt all the attention being on Ronaldo definitely allows Varane to just do what he does best. And it was pretty special to watch the 28-year-old win headers, make key blocks and show off that positional awareness.
You’d expect the performance levels to only increase as Varane gets used to playing alongside these new teammates, too. There was one mix-up which did lead to a Newcastle goal, but I’d put that on Maguire for diving in, rather than on Varane who was left in a one vs two situation.
As you’d imagine, the Man United fans would heap the praise on the key man, who cruised through the game vs Newcastle in brilliant manner.
