Manchester United fans were treated to watching a new face in action last night, with Facundo Pellistri making his club debut for the U23s.
The Uruguay winger was the surprise signing on deadline day, coming from Penarol in his home-town. After being handed the number 28 jersey, many fans thought that we’d see Pellistri within the first-team pretty much straight away.
Well, he would be on the bench against Paris Saint-Germain but that was largely due to an injury crisis. United had previously outlined their plans for Pellistri, which came into effect last night…
A young player moving to a new country was always going to need time to adapt and adjust. After all, Pellistri has only been here a little over a week. He was deemed ready to play his first game on Friday night, though, against Everton’s U23s in a heated battle.
Within the first 30 minutes, he’d be on the receiving end of a two-footed tackle from an Everton youngster. Some welcome to English football, huh…
Pellistri would shake it off and come back to enjoy a pretty steady debut. What I was most impressed with was his dribbling. The ball sticks to his foot like glue, making it super-tough for the opponents to take possession away from him.
I felt like Pellistri could have been greedier at times. He got into good shooting positions but opted for the pass instead. That selflessness will undoubtedly serve him well over time, but perhaps I’d like to see him back himself a little more.
Anyway, as debuts go, it wasn’t half-bad for Pellistri, impressing us and several United fans all over social media. Again, I’d like to reiterate it was in U23s football and it’s a massive jump up to the first-team level, but you have to be pleased with how it went.
