Donny van de Beek would be given a rare 45 minutes to prove his worth last night. He’d certainly take that chance.
When Donny van de Beek was signed last summer, Manchester United fans were rightly excited. The Dutchman had been an integral cog in that fantastic Ajax machine for the few season prior.
The early signs were positive. Van de Beek looked right at home in that United midfield. Even scoring on his debut against Crystal Palace. Sadly, United’s number 34 hasn’t scored since – while in truth, he’s looked pretty average when called upon.
I’m happy to report that last night, Van de Beek looked great. He’d be introduced at half-time for Paul Pogba, which is the most minutes he’s played in a game for quite some time. It’s no coincidence that what followed was some lovely football.
Silky passing, one-touch interplay, shots at goal, class movement. Van de Beek was displaying all his best traits and Granada just couldn’t deal with him working in between the lines.
We have every right to be encouraged. With United looking a lock to finish in second place, this could be the perfect opportunity to show some faith in Van de Beek. Give him his chance against Burnley this weekend and keep that confidence flowing. It also allows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to keep Bruno Fernandes and/or Paul Pogba feeling fresh for some huge Europa League games to come.
As you’d imagine, the United fans were left impressed with the great cameo from the star midfielder. They took to Twitter in their masses to heap praise on Van de Beek.
