Manchester United have themselves a new captain, with Harry Maguire being given the armband following Ashley Young’s departure to Inter Milan.
The 26-year-old has only been at the club for six months or so, but all credit to the Englishman – who has been a solid addition to the squad. I guess it says more about the lack of leadership within the current dressing room, but personally, I would have also given the captaincy to Maguire.
It was no doubt a tough decision for Solskjaer to make and I guess the only other viable options were Paul Pogba (who could be gone this summer) or David de Gea and for me, I’m not too keen on handing a goalkeeper the captaincy.
Amongst the fans, the news was met with mixed reaction. Some fans were happy, while others weren’t best-pleased with one supporter calling it a ‘joke’ appointment:
Maguire is exactly the type of character that this United side had been missing. You look at the defensive record in comparison to last season and we’re doing so much better – that’s no coincidence.
It’s not just his ability, it’s his aura and character. Maguire deserves praise for that and with a quality partner alongside him, I see no reason why he can’t go on to become one of the best centre-halves in the country.
Congratulations again, Harry!
