Without sounding too big-headed, Manchester United and academy excellence walk hand-in-hand.
The Red Devils have always had a way with developing and promoting youth, and under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, that flag is flying high.
Against Chelsea yesterday, there were no fewer than four academy products starting the game; Brandon Williams, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford. All were excellent, though the latter, in particular, massively impressed.
It definitely seems as though the now 22-year-old (Happy Birthday, Rashy!) loves it against the so-called big-six. He’s now scored five goals against Chelsea already!
His first was a well-taken penalty, and his free-kick, wow! All you can do is watch on with pride as Rashford ensures the red flag is flying high.
Again, the overall display from Rashford was sublime. He was a menace on the break, looked to bring others into play and didn’t mind taking the shot on. Throughout the match, he gave Chelsea problems, and capped things off with a brilliant brace.
United’s place in the quarter-finals is now secure, and playing like that, you’d fancy us against absolutely anyone. Rashford continues to improve and maybe, just maybe, he can be that 20+ goal-a-season striker that this club so desperately needs.
Anyway, for now, I’ll leave you with the best fan reaction to the 22-year-old’s stellar performance vs Chelsea:
