Manchester United had several ex-players partaking in Vincent Kompany’s testimonial at the Etihad Stadium last night, and for the most part, they all made a hugely positive impact.
Robin van Persie scored an excellent goal, Paul Scholes showed off his sublime talent and Gary Neville, well, er, he gave up a goal and pulled his hamstring inside one minute!
All jokes aside, my United Man of the Match was Michael Carrick. The 38-year-old oozed class when he was playing and even though he’s a coach, I genuinely believe he could still perform at a high level with the right players in and around him.
He’s that ‘Rolls Royce’ type footballer who just cruises through games while using his brain instead of his body – and the sheer quality of his decision-making is still out of this world.
It’s a real shame that we’ve gone from watching Carrick and Scholes in our midfield to the likes of Nemanja Matic and Fred. Although it highlights how far we’ve fallen recently, you have to look back and appreciate what we’ve had the pleasure of watching over the years.
Anyway, the United fans took to Twitter to praise the 38-year-old Carrick, with several believing that he could still be playing week-in-week-out at the highest level. Put it this way, I wouldn’t be against seeing it!
