Manchester United Football Club were brought right down to earth last night, with Reds fans less than impressed with the performance from Alex Telles vs Sheffield United.
We’re now set to be four points off the pace assuming Manchester City win their game in hand. That’s what poor losses at home do for your title challenges. Simply put, United had to win last night.
It’s all well and good saying we’re 12-18 months away, but if we’re not winning these sort of games with the squad available, who’s to say we’re guaranteed to win them next season?
Fans weren’t happy. To be brutally honest, you can criticise each and every player who started that game, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shouldn’t get off scot-free either.
However, the performance that summed it up for me was Alex Telles’. This is a guy who was brought in to be an offensive-minded full-back, in order to deliver width in these sort of games where teams sit back.
Telles never looked like he was breaking a sweat in order to join in on the attack. Instead, he was comfortable making the easy pass or playing it backwards. Simply put, we need more from him.
Alright, we all know he’s got a lovely set-piece delivery on him which did lead to a goal but that’s something Luke Shaw has massively improved on, while Shaw’s overall game is now looking miles better than Telles’.
It’s telling that Solskjaer had to hook his left-back in a game United were trailing. Rather than throwing on Juan Mata or giving Daniel James a chance, the Baby Faced Assassin was forced into changing a defender. That’s just how badly the Brazilian was struggling.
As you’d imagine, United fans weren’t best pleased with the defender who put in a ‘disgraceful’ performance last night against Sheffield United. They’d take to Twitter in their droves to vent…
